Why this course?

Ninth-grade English builds the reading and writing habits every other class leans on. You read novels, poems, plays and articles closely, and learn to back up what you think with evidence.

Colleges expect four years of English, one every year of high school.

What you'll learn

  • Read a story or poem closely and explain what the writer is doing
  • Write an essay with a clear claim and evidence from the text
  • Grow your vocabulary and use grammar on purpose
  • Talk about a book in a group and build on other people's ideas
  • Find and judge sources for a short research project

You'll do: Lots of reading, short and long essays, class discussion and at least one presentation.

Honors
Honors reads more and harder books, moves faster and expects longer, more independent essays.

What comes next
